THE HOWELL JOURNAL

WILLIAM HENRY HARRISON HOWELL

THE YEAR 1868

WHH Howell was born in 1842 in Coshocton Co., Ohio. He died in 1921 in Punta Gorda, Florida. WHH married Rebecca Emma" Arford in 1868 in Riley Co. Indiana

This journal, in the possesion of his granddaughter Deada Russeau King, was read and transcribed by his great granddaughters Marian (Sis) Pickard Christy and Patricia ( Patt) Pickard Carnevale in the year 2000.

This was a facinating read for my sister and I as the book was very small (3" X 4"), faded ink, torn spots, and written with many old English letters. However we found a myriad of relatives and a lifestyle of the times. Our grandfather started the commercial fruit selling in Coshocton Co., Ohio which continued for 3 generations and is still viable today in that area.

The journal starts in Ohio, moves to Pittsburgh, Pa. back to Ohio and ends with a move to Friendship, Indiana.

WHH's daughters Jenny Howell Patrick, Daisy Alice Howell Pickard Ruth, and Mabel Pearl Howell Russeau were all born in Illinois. The family moved to Florida in 1886 where they remained until their deaths.

Our hope in transcribing this journal is to preserve a small portion of the life of a man who was an intellectual, a dreamer and as my grandmother once stated "always late for
dinner while sitting on a curb in St. Augustine (fl) with his cronies". (Those cronies were Flagler, Ford, and Rockefeller} They were all dreamers but WHH didn't seem to be able to stick with anything long enough to bring his dreams to fruition. In Florida WHH was a teacher, an itinerant preacher, a medicine man and a rancher ( even had a medicine show at one time). He also was the producer of "Howell's Wonder Salve" which was sold in drugstores in FI, Oh, In, Ill. until the 1940's.
