Mar. 1, 1868
Today has been a dreary day without as it has been raining most of the day but dark clouds an dreary weather has but little significance over our spirit when surrounded by congenial spirits an that my good luck to be this situated.  I called this evening on Miss Hattie Emerie.  I engaged her society.  very nice

A stormy day  Snowing and blowing  I intended to start making my way home this morning but I did not feel like enforcing myself to the morning blast  Thus it is another March  It was unsafe to make any calculations in reference to a coming day for the fickelness of the weather renders our accumulations uncertain

A tolerably cold day but fair  This forenoon I spent at my Uncle H D and I expected it would terminate my visit  I started to bloomfield in company with aunt intending to go from there to Bloomington but learning there that there is a hack runs from Newburg (or bery) to Bloomington I returned in good spirits to enjoy the sosiety of my Aunt a little longer

A clear day considerably warmer than yesterday  I have been at Uncle Joes today  I took a sleep this forenoon felt considerably better after I awoke Coz Lizzie and I spent most of the evening in the room talking  We had a pleasant time

I left Uncles this morning about 5 o'c for Newbury and arrived there 7 o'c  Took the hack for Washington and got there in time for the train 3-25 for Cincinnati  Arrived to Cin midnite   A cloudy day today and since leaving my uncles I feel alittle lonesome.

A drizzly day today  I left Cincinnati this morning at 7 o'c and arrived Frazeyburg half past one  Came home and read a letter from my friend Emma   Have been reading some in the Phrenological Journal this evning  Also received a letter from R Conley

A cloudy day but warm  The frost is coming out of the ground very fast  I rode over to Mr. Staffords this forenoon ?  ? the school money  Came back ate my dinner and went over to Uncle J Howells  This evening I have been reading in the Cincinnati Times

A very plesant day  I commenced a letter to Lizzie Doney and L Bonham E.B.  Gen Franklin L.F., P.F. Nan Hays and several others came in and I postponed writing until this evening  Finished with my letter about 8 o'c

A cloudy day with some rain  Wrote a letter this forenoon to EA in answer to one written the ninth of Feb  It is a great pleasure to me to correspond with this lady moreso than with any strange correspondant I ever had  This afternoon Hamlin and I were cutting trees down on the hill This evening I have been reading

This forenoon very pleasant  I was working some on the hill chipping  Commenced raining about noon  Spent the afternoon at Uncle Eds  This evening I read some in the Phreological Journal

Very pleasant today  Winter appears to have loosed his icey fetters and spring has taken the place of the cold and cheerless weather of the past three months  I have been working on the hill today with Hamlin

A rainy day  I have not done anything out today  Have been reading some  I feel alittle melencholy perhaps owing to the dreariness of the day but so it is Dark clouds with loom up before us at intervals and render the future dark and dismal

A very pleasant spring day  Hamlin and Luther Norris have been cutting some logs on the hill today and I was helping some  I did not feel much like work today and consequently did not work much  Time passes pleasantly with one when I have something to do but when I have nothing to do it goes very slowly

Cloudy this morning with a gentle breeze  the forenoon very pleasant  Hamline and I were chopping this forenoon  We chopped one tree down this afternoon and it commenced raining and we quit  I rode to to Mr Nolands ? and this evening I have been writing some

A very warm day  I went to church this afternoon to the valley Heard Mr Marshal preach a very able discourse  I came home and went to Cones with Eli  Spent a very pleasant evening  Came home about 9 o'c  Wrote a letter to my friend Hattie

Commenced raining this morning about 7 o'c and has been raining all day with very little intermission but so it is with March  It is so very changeable that it reminds one of a fickle friend that meets us with smiles one day and with dark frowns the next

Alittle more pleasant today than yesterday but we have had several showers during the day   Cleared up this evening  I went to the Crossroads this forenoon for the mail but did not get anything as no mail came  Had a very muddy ride  This afternoon Hamline and I were chopping

A clear day again The clouds have all dissapeared and we have had a very fine day From all appearances the storm is over for a while I have been chopping today and I have felt remarkedly well And this evening Lewis V.Y.P.T. Cox were here and we had a plesant time And ? playing on the violin

A plesant day I was at Aunt Martha Cone this fornoon Came home and worked this afternoon cutting strings off of peach
buds and Hamlin and father were sowing vats I have
felt alittle gloomy all the evening and did not feel like reading any

Mar 20
Cloudy this morning and considerably colder yet a tolerable nice day for March I wrote a letter to A.C. Vanline Sandusky this morning and went to the PO Received a letter from
my friend Emma which I read with great pleasure spent
the afternoon visiting Mr Kilpatrick school at the cross-roads

Mar 21 .
The ground was covered with snow this morning and it has been a cold dissagreeable day I spent most of the day reading This evening I came over to Uncle J Howell and concluded to stay all night Spent the evening very plesantly

Mar 22 .
The sun came out fair and warm this morning and the snow is dissapearing very fast I wrote a letter to E A in answer to one received the twentieth and have been reading some The day is gone and night with its sable garment is hovering over all nature and sure retire to enjoy refreshing slumber

Today has been a very fine day Exceedingly warm I went to town today with JT Cox after a load of corn Found the roads very bad Wrote a letter to S.K. Wells and inclosed a PO money order for eight dollars in payment for physingnamy Felt very tired this evening

Rain in the night This morning some cloudy Hamline and I were sawing some logs this forenoon This afternoon I have been reading some and I was at Uncle J H awhile this after- noon Went down to the valley this evening expecting to hear Mr smith preach but he did not come

A very rainy day and a steady night rain last night I went to Mr John Hardesty's to a sale today but did not buy anything I came home past Mr Nolands and got James Noland to cut my hair I was very glad when I got home and being out in the rain all day I feel very drowsy this evening

A windy dissagreeable day I have not been out much Wrote a letter for J H also wrote one to Miss Maggie Dobbs as an introductory to a correspondence I have been reading some this afternoon Time very slowly with me for a few days back

A dull cloudy day well calculated to make a person feel melancholy but some days must be dark and dreary If there no cloudy days we would not appreciate sunshine So it is with us if we were never cast down we would not fully appreciate happier times I went to the PO expecting to get some letters but was dissapointed as no mail came owing to high water

Today commenced with rain but it did not rain much yet it has been a cheerless day I have not been doing much today and the time passes by slowly I did not feel like reading and my mind often wandered away to friends in the distance It is certainly a great pleasure to recall old friends ?

A very warm day and clear I helped dig up some apple trees this forenoon Mr Parks This afternoon I was cutting off some peach trees I wrote a letter to Miss Rose Conley this evening I take great plesure in a correspondence and were I left without any I would feel lonely Tomorrow I am looking for a very interesting letter from my true friend G.L.D. and I feel confident I will not be dissapointed

This has been a very fine day and this closes up another month I received two letters this morning one from cousin Lizzie and one from Emma Two of my best correspondants and I read them with a great deal of interest I answered Lizzie's letter this evening and feel very tired I shall soon retire

April 1
This fornoon pleasant but quite blustery This afternoon some rain I have been planting peach trees today and
feel very tired tonite I commenced a letter since dark but did not feel like writing and quit I commenced this morning to practice writing and intend to spend another hour or two studing every morning

April 2
This has been a plesant day alittle windy and some cooler I was planting peach trees this forenoon and this afternoon I was reading some and harrowed in a piece of wheat I received a book from Fowler and Wells entitled Physiogmony(?) which I find interesting

April 3
This has been a plesant day A little cool however for this evening and since dark it has been snowing some I have been at Mrs. Norris's since 10 o'c am (11 o'c) with a number of acquaintances called together to spend the day and eat of the good things prepared for the occasion Mr JC Norris launched on about the sea of matrimony with Miss McLCoy Success to them and all mindfull similarly disposed

This has been a blustery day am not feeling very well
I have kept close to the house I have been reading the most of the day in New Physiogmony I find it a very interesting work and one calculated to promote the advancement of humanity
 

April 5
This has been a bleak dissagreeable day I have been reading some and I wrote a letter to E A this afternoon Was at Uncle J Howells this forenoon It is now nearly nine o'c pm and I shall soon retire to enjoy refreshing sleep or meditate over scenes of the past or indulge in dreams of the future

April 6
The ground was froze hard this morning and it has been rather a dull day I went to the election this forenoon came home and read awhile this forenoon before dinner I planted out some peach trees this afternoon and have been reading in New Physiognnony since dark It is raining ?

This has been a very cold day I went to the post office this morning and there was considerable snow on the ground I received a letter from my dear friend E A which I perused with great deal of interest Hamlin and I were sawing logs this afternoon Israel MCConnell spent the evening with us

April 8
Still cold yet not so dissagreeable as yesterday I was trimming apple trees a part of the day for M Graham and I have been reading some Time passes very plesantly with me And it is my intention to improve my time well this summer

April 9
A very cold morning I got a horse from John Norris to ride to Mersern Went from there to Chaneys and stayed over night It commenced to snow about noon and has been the roughest afternoon that I ever remember in April The storm is more severe since dark I do not feel at all well

There were three or four inches of snow on the ground this morning I left John Chaneys about 8 0' c this morning came to the crossroads and received a letter from cousin Lizzie which I read with great interest I have been reading some this afternoon

This has been a cold disagreeable day I spent a part of the day reading and I was on the hill this forenoon awhile helping to get the logs off of the new ground This afternoon I spent reading and  writing and this evening I wrote some
on the subject of BP

April 12
A cold disagreeable morning commenced to rain about 8 o'c but it soon changed to hail and from hail to snow and we have had a regular winter's day There has fallen three or four inches of snow I have been writing a letter today to my friend Emma in answer to one received the seventh

A very cool morning but it has been moderating slowly all day and the most of the snow dissapeared I helped Hamlin saw some logs this forenoon and this afternoon I was helping to haul them off of the clearing I am getting very tired of cold weather and I hope this is our rough spell for
six months

This morning a good deal warmer Commenced raining about
8 o'c and we had quite a shower I wrote a letter to SR Wells also one to Miss Sharp and took them to the post office Did not get any mail I have been cracking peach seeds this afternoon and this evening I have been reading

This has been a very blustery day with some rain It is more like March weather than April I wrote a letter to cousin Lizzie since dark in answer received 10th I was cracking peach seeds today and I worked very faithfully and am tired and shall retire


April 16
This has been a changeable day Yet not quite so rough as we have been in the habit of having of late I worked very industriously today cracking peach seeds and I feel tired tonight I spent an hour or two writing this evening

This morning pleasant but the wind arose and it has been rather disagreeable The sun would be shining brightly and in ten minutes pouring down rain I went to the crossroads after the mail this morning and received two letters one from Emma and one from Hattie This after noon I cracked peach seeds

This morning clear and cloudy Cleared off about 10 O'c I have felt very unwell today and work went off with a drag I was cracking peach seeds and cracked two quarts and quit for this week I went over to Uncle Joseph Howells this evening and stayed until 8o'c

April 19
Rained this morning but it soon cleared off and it has been a very pleasant day I wrote a letter to my friend Emma in answer to one received the seventeenth This eveninq I went to Free meeting house to hear Mr Center preach I accompanied Miss SJN and enjoyed myself very well

April 20
This has been a rainy day I have not felt very well and did not do much this forenoon This afternoon I was cracking peach seeds I have been writing this evening  I shall soon retire for I did not sleep much last night and I
feel tired It is still raining


April 21
This has been a very fine day. I went to the PO this morning Did not get anything but my journal. This afternoon I was planting out some apple trees and since dark I have been reading in my P J which I find very interesting. It is now 20 minutes past nine and I shall retire.

April 22
A very fine day. I was cracking peach seeds this fore noon. This afternoon I replanted some peach trees. This evening I have been reading in the Phrenological Journal and in new psysiognony. Time passes pleasantly with me.

April 23
Quite cool all day today I was planting out cherry trees today and I worked very steady to get through I finished about five oclock and am very tired tonight Wrote a letter to my friend Hattie in answer to one received about a week ago The wind is whistling without and from appearance there will be a freeze

April 24
This morning cool I went to the PO and received two letters One from Emma and one from Fowler A Wells This afternoon I was replanting peach trees and have been reading some in the new psysiognomy this evening

April 25
This morning quite cool and some rain I have not worked much today for I did not feel well Having a severe cold I have been reading psysiognomy and am delighted with it I find it a very interesting book


April 26
This has been a very fine day and I have felt very dull from the effects of a cold I wrote a letter to my friend Emma but I did not feel much like writing I have been reading some this afternoon and evening Finished reading my book 8 oc

April 27
A very warm day I went to Moscow this forenoon after some quince bushes Got back about 1 oc This afternoon I was planting peach trees in a nursery I feel very tiard this evening and I shall not read any I shall soon retire

April 28
This has been a very fine day rather warmer than yesterday This afternoon it has been clouding up and is showing signs of storms before morning I have been planting peach seed today and am very tirad this evening

April 29
This morning we had a very nice shower I however went to the crossroads after some nails Came home and put in the balance of the day cracking peach seeds This afternoon has been quite warm and it has the appearance of rain again before morning

April 30
A very fine day today I was cracking peach seeds this fornoon and a part of this afternoon I planted out 60 quince bushes this afternoon I feel in very good sprits this evening owing perhaps to my expectations following some interesting news on the tomorrow

May 1
A very warm day and clear I went to the PO this morning and received a letter from cousin Lizzie which I took great pleasure in perusing Her missives are always welcome for they are imanations from one whom I regard as a true friend I finished planting my nursery south of the stable today Which count gives 20,000 peach seed

May 2
This has been a rainy day and I have not done much It quit raining this afternoon awhile and I helped do some grafting This evening I spent at Mr Fulkses It is now
half past ten and I shall retire

May 3
Rather cool this fornoon JT Con and Willis A1hri were here this forenoon awhile This afternoon I wrote a letter to cousin Lizzie I have been to Uncle J H awhile this evening Time passes pleasantly with me Pleasing hopes are entertained for the future

May 4
This morning was cloudy and cool but it cleared off this forenoon This afternoon has been uncommon warm I was
picking up peach seeds a part of the day It commenced raining alittle after dark and we have had quite a shower and alittle hail with it

This has been a very warm day I went to the post office this morning but no mail came on account of high water
I was considerable dissapointed for I was expecting some letters I came home and cracked peach seeds for my nursery

This morning cloudy with some prospect of rain but the sun burst through the clouds about 10 oc and as it were scattered tho but it gathered up this afternoon and commenced raining about 4 oc I was cracking peach seeds today

This has been a very dissagreeable day, very cool and dizzling rain the most of the day  I have been cracking peach seeds today and this evening I have been reading some in the new physiognomy Time passes very pleasantly

This has been a cool day I went to the PO this morning and received three letters One from cousin Lizzie one from Emma and one from Miss Dobbs I read them with great interest I was working with my peach seeds at part of
the day .

It is very pleasant day I was sowing some clover seed today THis evening I went to Mr Labin Vickers's I borrowed a book from him Theodosia in which I have been reading since dark I do not think much of the argument advanced I retire late as. J W Chaney came about ten and I am very drowsy

This has been a very nice day JW Chaney and family are here and we discussed the effect of baptism pretty freely and some other scriptural without making any change in either of our minds I have been reading some in Theodosia and do not admire it much Wrote to Enuna

A very pleasant day I have been cracking peach seeds the most of the day I read some in Theodosia Wrote a letter to my friend Emma This is a beautiful season Nature is clothing herself in her garb of green The birds are warbling forth their notes of praise for their deliverance from the cold churley days of winter

A very nice day I went to the post office this morning but did not get any news Came home and cracked peach seeds awhile This evening I helped plant some potatoes Since dark I have been reading I have felt very melancholy today from some cause

This has been a dissagreeable day Drizzling rain the most of the time and it does not show much signs of quitting but rather increases in gloominess I have felt very dull and gloomy all day but then such days will come and overcloud our spirits horizons

A dreary day Been raining steady I have not done much today Went down to the sawmill and hauled in some logs this afternoon Came home and wrote a letter to cousin Lizzy Such dreary weather it is enough to make a person melancholy but the sun shines behind the clouds All the same it is only hidden

This morning dreary looking some rain I went to the P 0 received a letter from my friend Emma which I read with great interest and it is a source of much real enjoyment to recall the faithful returns of this my loved friend I have been running around some this afternoon

May 16
A rainy day again and more rest I went to the sawmill this afternoon to get some logs and came home Have been writing some It has cleared up this evening and has the appearance of fair weather but it has gotten such a way of raining that it may not last long

May 17
The sun came out fair and nice this morning and gave promise of a fair day but before noon it commenced to rain again and it has been a wet afternoon S J Norris E Graham L Con and E S Howell were here today and we had a very pleasant time I wrote a letter to Emma in answer to one received the 15th

May 18
This fornoon cloudy and alittle rain I was trimming peach trees and this afternoon I went to the sawmill to get a load of frailings and feel very tiard although I have not done much and I shall retire earlier than common


May 19
This has been a very fine day I went to Dresden and found the road very bad I wrote a letter to S R Wells enclosed a money order for a books to the amount of twenty dollars Got home about 8 oc Feeling very tired and shall retire

May 20
Another fine day I went to Mr Crints this fornoon after sweet potato plants This afternoon I helped J Howell plant corn I feel very tiared tonight I spent a short time reading in physiognomy and this evening is cool and there will be apt to be frost

May 21
A very pleasant day  I helped J Howell plant corn today  We worked very faithful to get through with the field  Finished about dark tired and do not feel very much like reading any tonight  Tomorrow is mail day and I think I will get some news

A very pleasant day This afternoon I planted a peach orchard in a piece of new ground on the hill Planted seed among the corn This afternoon I planted a nursery of peach Had E Howell and W Howell to help me Received two letters one from Emma and one from Hattie Emerie

May 23
This morning looked very much like we were going to have a very wet day but it did not rain much I trimmed peach trees a part of the forenoon This afternoon I helped father do some grafting for myself and it still looks like rain tonight

May 24
A pleasant day which I spent at home I wrote a letter to my friend Emma in answer to one I received the 22nd Time passes pleasantly with me and hope points forward to a happy future It may be a dream but expectations will not be entirely without its reward

May 25
This has been a very warm day I was digging around peach trees and trimming Samuel Howell helped me this forenoon Tonight I have been writing some It is now 9 oc and I feel tired and sleepy I shall retire

May 26
This has been a very warm day I went to the PO this morning Wrote a letter to Mr Ramsey of Loveland Came home and helped plant corn the rest of the day This evening I have been reading in Phrenological Journal which I got today I shall retire as it is after nine

May 27
This morning cloudy I trimmed peach trees a part of the forenoon and dug around some after dinner I went to Mr Fulkses for some peach seeds and it commenced raining soon after I got there Came home and planted out some peach seed between showers

May 28
This has been a very warm day I spent the day trimming peach trees and this evening I wrote a letter to Miss Hatie Emerie in answer to one received about a week ago I am tired and sleepy and shall retire as it is after nine oclock

May 29
Some rain this afternoon but it cleared off and the afternoon has been very warm I went to Dresden with J C Norris today Received a package of books from Wells Came
home and found two letters for me one from sister Mary and one from Emma I took great pleasure in perusing them

May 30
This has been a very pleasant day I finished digging around my young peach orchard and planted out a nursery This evening I went down to Mr Fulkses and after I came (9 oc) I spent an hour or two reading in some books which I received from S K Wells

A very fine day I went to Mr Grahams to hear Mr Bombarger preach at 11 oc Heard a very interesting discourse James McDonald came home with me and spent a part of the afternoon I wrote a letter to Emma this evening another
month has flown Times movements - how fleet
