BUTLER CEMETERY

WEST

Again I offer my many thanks to those who responded to my request for information on burial place(s) for Butler along near the Mohawk Dam.

The information offered by Becky Tomes (via Scott Butler) was right on ..... except I think that it is an another Butler plot. The plot west of the dam seems to be for the Thomas Butler extended family and other people that I haven't identified as members of the Butler Clan. This makes sense because the Map of Coshocton County, Page 7, By M.J. Becker, C.A.1855 shows this as James Butler land. (Joseph Butler's plots should be on the east side of the dam.) Mary and I located at least 10 stones. I include what information we could get from them. I think that more information could be recovered if the stones were cleaned better than we could with no equipment.

This presents a new opportunity for member of your group to excel. On pages 102-103 of Anecdotal Journeys into Lost and Forgotten Cemeteries of Coshocton County, by Dal Donovan is an the entry:

"The Butler cemetery near Mohawk Dam has only three ancient markers and one footstone. It also has benefactors who recently erected two new monuments, one for Joseph and one for Elizabeth. In November of 2001 Paul Spurgeon, a long time native of the area, led me to this old cemetery.......I am certain this is the graveyard Mary Lou and Sue remembered as only, a stack of stone.' ........."

Thank you Jerry Fisher, Scott Butler and the members of the Yahoo Coshocton List for providing information on this cemetery.
