William H. Bachert (born: Nov. 30, 1863; died April 27, 1940), lived in the home he built at 636 Chestnut St. until his death. He was one of Coshocton's outstanding industrialists and was married to Edith Wagner (born: May 5, 1865); died Sept. 14, 1946). He was the son of Ernest Bachert, born Dec. 21, 1834 in Geissen, Germany and died Sept. 11, 1921 in Coshocton. Ernest learned the paper manufacturing business in Freiburg, Germany and was part owner of the Massillon Paper Company from 1889-1892.

W.H. Bachert assumed the position of General Manager of the Coshocton Straw Paper Co., later taking over a controlling interest in the firm and becoming its president. He went into retirement in 1913.
Mr. Bachert was also widely known in real estate circles in Coshocton owning several large business blocks and was a member of the Elks Lodge of Coshocton. His son, Karl W. Bachert (born: Oct. 19, 1888; died Dec. 10, 1974), assumed ownership of W.H.'s assets when he passed away and in 1965 he renovated the Park Hotel on Main St. and had it up and running for some time. The Coshocton Straw Paper Co. was sold to the Stone Container Corp. in Mansfield, Ohio in the 1950's. Mr. Bachert was instrumental in establishing the Coshocton Country Club (as per a copy of the Charter which we have in our possession). The Bacherts contributed large sums of money to the Presbyterian Church and Coshocton Memorial Hospital just to name a few.

K. W. Bachert was married to Mary Louise Robinson (born: Aug. 23, 1889; died July 21, 1961) who was a descendant of Charlie Williams (born: 1764 in Hagerstown, Maryland; died Aug. 1, 1840 in Coshocton). Charlie owned a store in Coshocton and in 1802 he was alleged to have booted Louis Phillippe, the exiled French King out of his tavern, thus earning the name "King Charlie". Mary Louise Robinson Bachert's ancestors....Johnstons, Williams and Carpenters are registered with the First Families of Ohio as well as Daughters of The American Revolution. (Documentaiton is available upon request).

The brick house on Chestnut St. was a magnificent home and was sold to a Dr. Lee in 1974 or 75 when Karl W. Bachert died. I have heard it is vacant and a relative in Columbus is checking into ownership, the possibility of getting it historical status, doing some renovations and possibly turning it into a museum. Had it been possible, I would have had the home moved to Cleveland.

Thank you again,
