Sept 1
This has been a wearisome day to me I have not very felt well and I attended market with some peaches but found a dull sale I was up this morning half past three and I have felt alittle drowsy Wrote a letter to Uncle Ed this evening

 

Sept 2
Another day gone by and with it all the privileges it afforded Went to express office this morning found_some peaches there had them taken to the market house and sold out this forenoon I have been taking things easy this afternoon


Sept 3
I arose this morning at five oclock Went to express office and found twelve boxes of peaches from Dr E Cone  Commenced raining soon after I got there and we have plenty of rain from that until noon  I disposed of my peaches  Wrote a letter to Dr E Cone this evening

Sept 4
Received no peaches today Bought alot of boxes and took them to the station to send to Dresden This afternoon I have not done much Received two letters today from Dr E Cone Emma and also one from Fowler and Welles Answered Emmas letter this evening I retire

Sept 5
This has been a busy day with me  Went to the depot this morning and found 38 boxes of peaches (50bu) and I went to work to dispose of them and was successful in disposing of them Received a letter from Hamlin and answered it  Also wrote one to Dr E Cone


Sept 6
This morning very nice The sun shone brightly and everything lovely but before night the sun was overclouded and we had some rain Went to church on Smithfield Street and heard a very interesting discourse Also this evening at the same place

Sept 7
I did not receive any peaches this morning Bought two loads (100) boxes and had them taken to the express depot and marked ready for sending home Received a letter Lizzie L Doney which I perused with great interest Answered it this evening

Sept 8
Received 20 boxes of peaches this morning Went to the express office by 5 oc and disposed of them by 7 oc Have been alittle lonesome today Wrote a letter to Dr E Cone

Sept 9
Received 11 boxes peaches and attended market with them Disposed of all of them Feel somewhat tired tonight My room mates have all left and I feel alittle lonesome I shall retire early to forge the cares of the day

Sept 10
Received twenty boxes this morning and disposed of them Received two letters one from sister Mary and one from H B Smith Wrote four one to Dr E Cone L H Howell J W Chaney and J B Haney 10oc I shall retire

Sept 11
Went to the express office this morning at four oclock but found nothing for me Came back and slept till nearly seven This has been a dissagreeable day Rained very hard all forenoon Received a letter from Uncle Ed Have felt very drowsy all day

Sept 12
Rained again today and I have felt very drowsy Bought a load of boxes and got them ready to send home Have not felt well today and this evening I would go to a slight of hand performance Bought a ticket that drew a sack of flour

Sept 13
Rain this morning Went to church on corner of Smithfield and Seventh Street Heard an interesting discourse from Luke 9-11 Ask and it shall be given You subject was continued this evening Wrote three letters H B Smith sister Mary and my friend Emma


Sept 14
Received 11 boxes of peaches this morning and disposed of them Have been putting the day running around and writing Wrote a letter to Uncle Ed E Miller and Fowler and Welles Went to a public entertainment at Masonic Hall this evening,

Sept 15
Received 23 boxes peaches and disposed of all but 4 boxes Worked very faithfully to get rid of them Wrote a letter to Uncle Ed this evening Went out on 5th Street about dark and stopped at an auction of Shelly &c. &c. &c.

Sept 16
Thirteen boxes of peaches today and a difficult matter to get rid of them Hope I will not get any more for a few days Wrote two letters this evening One to New ?sonk Coin merchant and one to cousin ,Lizzie L Doney Am tired and shall retire 9 oc

Sept 17
Time passes swiftly by and as it bears me along I hope that I may make that use of it that will profit me in after life Situated among strangers and sometime sigh for companionship among those that are congenial with my mind Received a letter from Dr E Cone and wrote one to him

Sept 18
Have not had much to do today Put in the most of my time at the market Received a letter from Emma and read it with interest Took a walk out on the street Came back and commenced a letter to Emma but did not finish it


Sept 19
Received 13 boxes peaches this morning and have been all day selling them Received a letter from brother Hamlin and finished writing to Emma Feel very tired and sleepy and shall retire soon

Sept 20
Rain all day and time pass slowly Went to church on Smithfield Street this fornoon and tonite heard interesting sermon Am laboring under a severe cold which makes me feel badly I shall retire 9 oc

Sept 21
Another day gone and
I feel unwell from a bad cold I sold 11 bushels apples and this afternoon I sent two loads of boxes home Received two letters Titus & Company M Band E Miller Wrote two Dr E Cone and one to Ellie Miller Shall retire at 10 oc


Sept 22
A wet dissagreeable day and I felt the affects of it Did not receive anything today and time has passed slowly Wrote a letter to J B Haney on business This evening I have been reading a lecture on the use of money which is very interesting

Sept 23
Rained this morning but it broke away before noon Received three letters
Lizzie Doney Hattie Emerie and J T Con Answered Hattie and commenced one to Lizzie Have been out to see a torch light procession and it was a grand affair Took one hour and fifteen minutes to pass one point Must have been five miles long More spectators than I ever saw at one gathering before

Been raining all day Have nothing to do but look around and write Was out
to see the procession and it was a grand affair Had it been a nice day what a crowd would have been As it was it required and hour and twenty minutes to
pass Finished my letter to Lizzie Received one from Emma and answered it

Rain all day again and low spirits followed Have been in my room all day Wrote a letter to Dr E Cone Hope rain will cease and spare skies will rule for a few days Time drags heavily

Clear this morning and very glad I am of it Received 16 boxes peaches this morning and have been in market all day Sold twelve boxes Received two letters one from Dr E Cone and one from N.Y. Wrote one to Dr E Cone this evening Wrote a letter to J T Con and wrote a letter to brother Hamlin

A beautiful day I got 100 boxes taken to the depot and marked them for sending to Dr E Cone Sent 8 boxes to N.Y. West Titus and Company
Received two letters Dr E Cone A Meeks Wrote three West Titus and Company Dr E Cone and A Meeks Have been very unwell today Had a pleasant time this evening playing accordian

A fine day Have not felt well for a few days Did not leave my room this forenoon Went to the depot this afternoon and found 17 boxes peaches Sent them to N.Y. Wrote a letter to West Titus and Company Feel quite well this afternoon

A pleasant day I have had nothing to do today Was in market a part of this
fornoon Received two letters one from Uncle Ed and one from J B Haney. Wrote
one to bother Hamlin Another month has passed and I soon shall leave Pittsburgh

Cloudy Left Pitts at 11/4 am for New York Enjoyed the trip very much The beautiful scenery and view from the passing train demanded my attention and I did not tire from seeing the lofty mounds of the ? The deep ravine with the little stream winding its way along presenting to the eye varily and grandly Took supper at 4:48 at Alltown

Came from Jersey City this morning on a ferry Crossed over north river 5oc and a very fine day Went over East river this forenoon on a ferry to Brooklyn Heard K W Reeche preach a very interesting discourse Went to the house of Industry to a safe bath School singing at 3 oc Went from there to Central Park Took a walk up Broadway returned at 91/2 oc

Went to express office and found our peaches in very good condition Took them to West Titus visited Fowler A Wells Spent a part of the day in the market Have enjoyed myself finally Had a pleasant talk with Uncle Ed this evening Retired 11 oc

day I went to the market this morning and from there to 5th avenue Walked from 8th St to 23rd (to Av. hotel and Madison) Square Settled West Titus and Company and left on 5 oc train Am very sleepy and do not enjoy the ride very well

10 oc Have been looking around some and planing to leave Will soon be home
if I have no bad luck and am not sorry Have seen enough of city life to

A pleasant day and time passes pleasantly I - went to town today after my trunk and waited for Uncle Ed Got home about 6 oc Commenced writing a letter but did
not feel like completing it Received two letters Fowler A Wells and a return letter R Conley.

A beautiful day I went to Dresden again today to a political meeting and heard an interesting statement of the affairs of the country Political excitment runs high and the importance of the occasion justifies due consideration

A pleasant morning I went to church at Chaffant's this morning Heard Harvey Wilson preach a funeral discourse of F Stafford Went to singing school to the valley this afternoon and to church to the same place this evening

We are having beautiful weather I rode out to Mr Messers today on some business Came by Lewis Chaney's and bought his dried apples at $2 per bushel Paid $20. on them Went down to Uncle Eds this evening to settle with him

A fair day Went to the election this morning and from there to A C.Meeks
Rode over with J W Chaney to the election at Wrights school house Came home feeling very tired Wrote a letter to Voight Mahood and Company this morning Shall retire soon 9 oc

Cloudy this morning and has been raining some through the day Went out to Mr Lakes this morning to see him but did not find him at home Have not done much today Have been reading some this evening

A raw cold day I went to Dresden today and it was a dissagreeable trip Called on Mr Eaton and borrowed 50 dollars for two months Stopped at Uncle Eds as I came home and settled up our speculations Balance due me 44 dollars

A very fine day Went over to see George Fulks this morning with J T Cox
There has been company here all day and I have been at home Took a walk this evening and since dark I have been sitting by the fire thinking over my future prospects Once week from tonight I hope to be with Emma

Has been cloudy all day and been trying to rain I went down to settle with Mr Parks this morning  Paid him 25 dollars on sawing  Have been piling up some lumber this afternoon  Wrote some since dark

McFarlands for some peach seeds this afternoon Do not feel very well tonight
and have spent the evening in meditation Shall retire soon to enjoy the revigoratihq effect of sleep

bushels and brought them home Went over to George Fulks with Eli bought 2 bushels of chestnuts Have been writing a piece to put in a school paper Retire 9 oc

A fine day alittle cool Took a load of dried apples to the depot Went to Dresden
and done-some trading Piled up some lumber after I came home Went down to Mr Parkses Came home and packed up ready to start west 12 oc I retire to enjoy alittle sleep

A fine morning Made preparations for leaving home Started for Dresden about 10oc
Took the train at 3 oc and arrived Cinn. 10 oc Enjoyed the ride very much as it brought me near the object of my visit

A very pleasant morning Left Cincinati 7 oc this morning Arrived at
Dillsborough about 9 oc Came to Friendship by way of public conveyance and wa1ked from there to Mr Arfords Formed a very pleasing acquaintance and enjoyed her company very much

A pleasant day and one that I will not soon forget for it was spent among friends and with one whose aquaintance I have taken great pleasure in cultivating through a correspondence Went to the church this evening and spent a few hours with my friend Emma

A very warm day Started out on the hunt of a school and was successful Engaged one for four month at 2 dollars per day Have been reading some on political questions this evening Shall retire 8 oc pm Wrote two

Came home and spent the balance of the day reading This afternoon cloudy
with some rain Have been reading this evening Retired at 10 oc after spending an hour or two with my friend Emma

A very fine day The clouds of yesterday have all disappeared and the sun shine in his beauty Have been studing some today in history Reading some in Great Men of Our Day Time passes pleasantly Plenty of good company and nothing to do but read and study

A very pleasant day Have been sitting around the house all day and feel alittle lazy time passes rather slowly and I begin to wish I had something more to do than to sit around and read Spent the evening pleasantly

Cloudy this morning but it soon cleared off and we had a pleasant day Spent the day in the school room and this time passed by pleasantly Am well pleased with my school and think I will get through without any difficulty

Received a letter from Voight Mayhood and Company and answered it Spent the evening pleasantly with E A Retired 1 oc to enjoy some sleep

to church this evening at the same place Time is moving along and as it passes I hope I may so improve the moments that I will not regret their departure

The duties of the school room demand my attention again and although they are imperfectly performed yet I aim to discharge them to the best of my ability Another month has run its course Went to church at Paul town tonight

A very cold day which rendered the school room a little unpleasant A close of the week for me in the school room and the privilege of resting a day or two is very acceptable Have been reading some this evening

A very cold morning Thermometer 7' below zero Started to Versailles about 10 oc Received a letter from Uncle. Ed with PO money order Got home about 6 oc Spent the evening pleasantly with Emma

Not as cold as yesterday Feel very dull and sleepy Did not go to churc~ Slept a part of the day Have been reading some this evening Feel alittle unwell and shall retire to enjoy the envigerating effects of sleep 8 oc

A beautiful day Winter appears to be losing his icy fetters perhaps only to take a firmer grasp Spent the day in the school room Wrote two letter one to Uncle Ed and one to Rev Robertson Went to church this evening to Dillsboro Heard Mr Stepheson

Another day put in and the opportunity and privileges which it brought passed by never to be recalled Have tried to discharge my duties in the school room to the best of my ablity Went to church to Paultown tonight

A dark dissagreeable day Clouds obscured the sun and misted rain all day Spent the day in the school room as usual and spent the evening pleasantly Retire 11 1/2 oclock

A pleasant day spent in the school room and in performing the duties that daily dev olve on me I am sensible to the responsibility of the place I occupy and I feel weak in my own strength yet I hope I will receive that help from on high that will enable me to discharge my duties faithfully

The old year is departing  Whatever of good might have been accomlished it is now too late to change the scales   The past record is unchangable and forever will remain so  Hope as time drifts me along that I will not have lived in vain  That some will be the happier for the influence which I exert and that the close of life will not go out as this year is going with skies  ? and repentent tears falling for (page ton off) some are falling from the clouds
