Reverend Lewis Gideon WALKER

Lewis was 9 years old at the death of his father, Adam in 1859.  By this time, his oldest sister, Caroline, was age 17 and married to Josiah Bible who was quite a bit older.  Mr. Bible owned and operated a dry goods store in West Lafayette, a small town near Coshocton.  This considerate man took Lewis and his two other older sisters into his home.  Within several years, the girls married.  In the meantime, Lewis continued school and worked in the Bible store.

In 1865, at age 15, Lewis was apprenticed to his future father-in-law Cyrus Cooper.  Cyrus owned and operated a large blacksmith establishment near Coshocton.  Lewis remained employed by Cyrus until, at the age of 24, Lewis purchased the blacksmithy in 1874.  Lewis owned it until sometime in 1888 when it was sold.  However, during those fourteen years and for most of the remainder of his life, Lewis' main vocation, like his father, was to buy, sell and trade farms.  At any given time, Lewis owned from several to a half dozen farms which he rented to sharecroppers but his primary purpose was to build his mortgage portfolio.  His favorite rhyme and one which he was fond of quoting was "A lender not a borrower be".  A few years before his death, Lewis gifted a good sized sum of money as well as a farm to each one of his five sons.

As a young man, his favorite recreational activity was horses.  Lewis had a reputation for his way with mean and unruly horses.  He liked to engage in horse and buggy racing and took pride in owning the best rig and fastest horse in the county.

Lewis had brownish hair and hazel eyes.  Although not as tall as Adam, Lewis inherited the physical strength and mental ability of his father.  Lewis was almost revered by local people for his judgement and common sense.  In addition hew was well liked for his wit and willingness to help others.  He was a righteous man who trusted in the Lord Jesus.  He prayed and read his Bible daily.  He attended church and tithed regularly.  Throughout his life he read widely, mostly with respect to farming and religion.  He never used profanity.  He neigher smoked nor chewed tobacco nor used alcoholic beverages.  He was a life long registered Republican and spoke in behalf of Republican candidates at political rallies.  He thought the Federal Income Tax was unconstitutional.  After the inauguration of the Income Tax Act in 1913, he ignored it a refused to file returns.  Of course, clergymen were exempt.

About 1882, at the age of 32, Lewis began to preach and teach in local Campbellite churches.  For the remainder of his life, this was his chief avocation.  Most weekends, he would travel as far as fifty miles to some small county community to preach a weekend church meeting.  He would accept no payment but on the contrary gave generously to the local work.  It is said he was instrumental in the establishment of over forty-five churches.  During the last thirty years of his life, he was in demand as a speaker and teacher at Christian Church/Church of Christ national and state conventions and other conferences and meetings.  He also was an active Freemason.

Patient 3 mo. In Aug 1931 suffered a "stroke of apoplexy". Resident of Centerburg for 37 yrs. Wife died 3 1/2 mo. before, both in 88th yr - married 69 yrs. Funeral Sat 15 Aug 1936, buried Centerburg Cemetery.  Lewis was 5 when mother died, 9 when father died.  Lived among neighbors and farmed to help support family.  Joined church in 1867 - Yankee Ridge, Cosh. Co., OH.  Began preaching in 1880; previously a blacksmith.
