Descendants of Cyrus COOPER

Notes

1. Cyrus COOPER

Cyrus was a prosperous man who owned and operated a large blacksmith establishment near Coshocton, Ohio.  The nineteenth century rural blacksmith might employ up to a dozen men.  They were craftsmen who made hand tools like hammers, drills, saws, axes and chisels.  They also made builders hardware such as nails, knobs, hinges, pulls, bars for doors and furniture hardware.  Of course, since all local transportation of both people and goods in that day was provided by horses, a blacksmith's principal output consisted of horseshoes, harness replacement parts hardware and wagon and carriage replacement parts hardware such as wheels.  Some blacksmiths even provided veterinarian services by treating horse wounds and diseases.  In 1865, throughout rural America, this business was at its zenith.  By the end of the century, except for horseshoes, production line manufacturing would replace blacksmithing.

Cyrus was intelligent and a good teacher.  He also was a follower of Alexander Campbell.
