COSHOCTON COUNTY, OHIO RECORD OF BIRTHS 1867-1879

This transcription, from the RECORD OF BIRTHS - PROBATE COURT --- COSHOCTON COUNTY, OHIO was undertaken. These records were microfilmed by the Genealogical Society of Utah in February 1972. The Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah has the microfilm available to the public as film number 0895283. It is from that microfilm that this transcription was made.
On June 6, 2001 a copy of the FHL film 0895283 was burned to a CD, using the equipment furnished to the public at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City. The transcription began soon after that date. Completion of this CD was accomplished October 31, 2001. Ray F. McCune, S. Jan McCune and MariAnn Arbon have completed this project and it is copyrighted.

You may not copy the data, except that you may print, photocopy, or download portions of the data for your personal family history research only. You may not publish or sell any portion of the data in any format except as part of your personal family history. The transcribers have spent hundreds of hours doing this project. Despite our efforts in eliminating errors, they will undoubtedly still be found. If you find errors and want to inform us, we will make the changes after verifying your suggestions. You can e-mail us at rfmccune@digis.net. In a small way, we hope this will thank those who have gone before us, who have provided their data to make genealogy easier for us. This is given in the spirit of Paying it forward. Ray and Jan McCune.

RECORD OF BIRTHS - PROBATE COURT --- COSHOCTON COUNTY, OHIO

For your Information

Most of the errors that were listed in the original documents have been maintained. You can quickly see that there are many variations in spellings. Some are correct. Some are not correct. It is hard not to make changes.

  • I have added an "Original Sort No." This lists each name numerically. The individuals begin with "1" and end with "5,449".  The Probate Court pages had a column for numbering each entry, but was not always used. Therefore we opted not to use that column.
  • The State of Ohio and Coshocton County are assumed unless specifically otherwise stated.
  • The original gender was shown using ditto marks under each column. We opted to put a "M" for male names and "F" for female names. Many of the genders were out of order due to following a line across two pages to enter them. Therefore, we opted to list gender by first name if it was easily determined. When gender cannot be determined by first or second name then the gender was left as shown in the original probate document.
  • Race is broken down into two categories. "White" and "Colored." We found only one "Colored" birth and she is listed as number 4787 under "Original Sort No."
  • There is a new column added called "Corrected Page." This is a list of changes that we have made which we thought should be done. You can go to the microfilm copy and determine what the changes were. Changes were made based on what we would have done in entering that information into our family history records. We recognize that we could be wrong and you may want to go back to the original document.
  • All names need to be phonetically approached if you don't see the typical spelling for your family. There are differences like: Alice, Alace; Wright, Right; Black, Bluck; Fisher, Fischer; or Ankrim, Ankrum. Most people would have a hard time reading my handwriting. We had a lot of difficulty seeing the difference between "a," "e," "o," and "s,."

It is our opinion that the probate record that we used was not the original document. At some time many of these names were entered alphabetically for the whole year. We should note that entries were made on a fiscal year basis. There had to be different people making the records because of the different spellings all in the same handwriting. Then the Probate Court record was made. It is not known if the original documents are in existence.
